This artwork was created to honor unity; the keffiyeh wrapped around the watermelon uniting symbols of land and sea, heritage and identity, culture embracing itself. It stands as a reminder that even when restricted, identity endures, and through symbolism, memory continues to live on. The watermelon in this piece carries historic symbolism. During times when the Palestinian flag was banned, the fruit became a quiet yet powerful representation of identity, as its natural colours mirror those of the flag. Wrapped around it is the keffiyeh: a traditional scarf, its net-like pattern often said to represent fishing nets and connection to the sea, while its lines reflect movement, trade, and rootedness to the land. In gold Arabic script, the word Falasteen is written across the piece, honouring both language and land. The gold signifies value and sacredness, reminding us that identity is precious and enduring.
