About the Art

This artwork came from a conversation with a Gazan; a hero in their own right. When asked what truly represents them, the answer was simple: a key and olive branches. Not as decoration, but as memory. The key symbolizes homes they are not allowed to return to; homes taken, doors closed, land seized. Yet many families still hold the original keys passed down from their grandparents and ancestors. The key is not just metal; it is proof, a witness. It is history. It is the right to belong. The olive branch was painted alongside it, representing rootedness, resilience, and connection to the land that cannot be erased. The keffiyeh border, painted separately by hand, wraps the piece in identity and heritage. Because even if they are kept from their homes, the memory of home cannot be taken. The key remains.
